Tips for running your studio

Some of what makes a studio thrive isn't spelled out in the game. A few things worth knowing:

  1. Tip 01

    Look for a Great Fit

Every genre and topic pair shows a fit badge before you commit. Great fits earn noticeably more and Poor fits earn less, so check it every time.

  2. Tip 02

    Ship early on new platforms

Games released in a platform's first few months get a big launch bonus, while aging platforms sell less and less. Buy dev kits early so you're ready on day one.

  3. Tip 03

    Don't milk a series

Several games in the same genre and topic close together cause sequel fatigue. It wears off after a break of about two years; the hint by Make Sequel tells you when fans want a rest.

  4. Tip 04

    Longer projects build creativity

Creativity builds every month a game is in development and adds quality at release. Very short projects only get part of it.

  5. Tip 05

    Some hires hide talents

About a quarter of candidates have a hidden ability, only vaguely hinted on their card. It reveals itself after you hire them.

  6. Tip 06

    Mind the morale

Very unhappy staff may quit, and long projects slowly drain morale. Refusing a raise hurts; team outings and unprompted raises help.

  7. Tip 07

    Contracts pay the bills

Contracts bring in cash between games, but short-staffing one fails it and costs reputation. Putting half your team or more on contracts lowers morale.

  8. Tip 08

    Time your marketing

Use Time to Release so a campaign starts the month your game ships. Launch campaigns boost day-one sales; long-term ones keep sales going.

  9. Tip 09

    Ride your hot streak

Back-to-back hits build a streak that boosts revenue. Your best game each year also competes for Game of the Year.

  10. Tip 10

    Scout before you poach

You can only poach a rival's staff after scouting them, one attempt per trip. Win or lose, they may come for your people next.

  11. Tip 11

    Plan around the seasons

Summer, Halloween, Black Friday and especially Christmas boost sales, while January makes development cheaper.

  12. Tip 12

    Six months to recover

If cash goes negative, you have six months to get back above zero. Bank loans are interest-free, and leasing an office keeps early costs down.
